The Earth can be everything to everyone, but as humans, we can’t.
That’s especially true during the holidays, when besides 4 calling birds and 3 French hens, there are roughly a million end-of-year parties, meetings, conference calls, and… um… elves judging us from their shelves. (Note to self: Why.)
That’s why today’s small step is to prioritize rest, whether it’s for a full day or even just 20 minutes. Studies show taking a break from your phone, laptop, or social calendar can lead to a better mood, more energy, and a stronger immune system. (A 2008 study says resting between work tasks improves productivity and performance, which means not being a spreadsheet machine can actually make you better at your job.)
“But what will I do when I’m trying to do nothing?” you may ask, and that’s a great question. We recommend touching base with nature, getting into a new book, making yourself a cup of hot cocoa, or even just taking a few deep breaths.
And because we wouldn’t recommend any small step we’re not doing ourselves, some personal news: We’re pausing the newsletter until January 3 to prioritize our own rest. But if you’d like some New Year's Resolution ideas, don’t worry—we’ve got an archive of small steps for big changes right here.
