Vegan Coffee Creamer

If you said “good morning” to anyone today, it was probably because of coffee. That’s why when it comes to plant-based creamers, we’re not taking any chances. We spent a month testing all vegan creamers for coffee that we could get our hands on, then asked our trusted local baristas in New York and Los Angeles which plant-based milks and creams they trusted with their finest daily grinds.

Here’s a cheat sheet of how our Java Jedis like their plant-based coffee drinks. Got your own suggestion? Email us hello@wildelements.com and we’ll keep updating the site!

For Foamy Lattes and Cappuccinos…

Every barista we asked said oat milk has the best thickness and frothing ability for those Central Perk-style drinks. Even better, oat milk has the density to keep cinnamon, powdered cocoa, and nutmeg on top of its foam cloud like the real thing. Oatly’s “Barista Edition” is the industry standard, and you can buy it at most supermarkets to use at home.

For Morning Donut Shop Vibes…

You know those tiny cups of cream they stash on diner tables? The vegan version is Nutpods, an ultra-rich formula that comes in original or hazelnut. Created by women with 95% renewable and plant-based packaging, this is your solution to “regular” cream-two-sugars coffee, but so much better.

For Black Tea…

If the acid of Earl Grey or English Breakfast is a little too tough on your morning stomach, a shot of NotMilk adds the right amount of creaminess without committing the cardinal sin of some other plant-based milks—namely, making that weird grainy film on top of your steaming water. Bonus: this is also excellent plant-based “milk” for your cereal!

For Matcha…

Our baristas are split on this one, because it comes down to personal preference. If you like your matcha creamy, coconut milk has the texture, along with a slightly sweet quality that counteracts the sharp taste of this superpowered energy tea. If instead you like your matcha pure—but your stomach needs a little bit of milkiness—a shot of almond or soy milk is all you need.

Or Make Your Own!

Our favorite online recipes include cashew milk from the Wooden Skillet, and this vanilla almond creamer, with options for sweetened and unsweetened. Of course, you could also skip straight to the best non-dairy ice creams…
